Kathakali -

The story of Othello, by William Shakespeare

Kathakali is a 1500-year-old classical dance drama of Kerala(India), which combines the facets of the ballet, opera, masque and pantomime. The richness of this classical dance is its magnificent mixture of color, expression, music and drama that are unparalleled in any other art form.

The Story of Othello, by William Shakespeare, revolves around four central characters: Othello, a Moorish general in the Venetian army; his beloved wife, Desdemona; his loyal lieutenant, Cassio; and his trusted but unfaithful ensign, Iago. The varied themes of racism, love, jealousy, betrayal, revenge and repentance, Othello is still often performed in professional and community theatres alike and has been the basis for numerous operatic, film, and literary adaptations. This play is carefully executed with rich lasya (graceful and languorous movements) in Kathakali style.
